In memoriam

JAVIER SÁNCHEZ SÁNCHEZ (1961 - 2023)

My father was, before being an exceptional lawyer, a truly extraordinary person: calm, upright, and generous. From him I learned the most valuable things in life and also this profession; above all, a way of understanding it with connection, depth, and humanity.

He began his career in Local Government and, some time later, joined the Assembly of Madrid as Legal Counsel, where he devoted more than two decades of commitment and public service, eventually becoming head of its Legal Advisory Office.

He earned a PhD in Law from Universidad Carlos III de Madrid with the distinction of sobresaliente cum laude, and he was recognized as a Corresponding Member of the Royal Academy of Jurisprudence and Legislation.

He always wanted to share his knowledge, and he did so with a widely recognized vocation for teaching. His intellectual curiosity led him to carry out intensive university and research work at UC3M, within the departments of Administrative Law and Philosophy of Law. From that dedication several works were born —some written together with colleagues from different countries— including:

  • Cuestiones de Teoría Jurídica. Manual para un Curso de Teoría General del Derecho (2020).

  • Formación de los derechos. Del Estado conformado al Estado garante (2020).

  • Compendio de Derechos Fundamentales. La libertad en español (2021).

In his later years, almost as a farewell, he also published “La Trilogía del Olvido” a series of novels that very engagingly recount the final episodes of Spanish decolonization:

  • Contra las olas (2018).

  • Viento de marzo (2020).

  • No me dejes solo (2022).

Those who were fortunate enough to know him know that his greatness went far beyond professional or literary merits. He will always be remembered as a wonderful human being.

Rest in peace.
